Chicago Rap

Of course we all know Chief Keef. And even even though he was born in Atlanta and moved here at 3, Kanye is still proclaimed as Chicago's prodigal child. But are we really paying attention to the real talent hidden in the Land?

Rap in Chicago has been really breaking down into its two sections: trap music and non-trap music. But there are more and more artist who are beginning to change how Chicago rap is really seen. Not everyone is a copy of Keef or Kanye. There are those like Lil Bibby who are known for their hard raps but also having the skill to put their words in a more lyrical way than what you would expect from drill music. There are also those who have followed Chief Keef upward and are trying to make a name for themselves, examples being Lil Reese, Billionaire Black, Fredo Santana and others. Or Lil Herb and Lil Durk, who have come up into the game when Chief Keef was away at rehab. They bring back the group rap that we used to see in R&B bands like B2K, B5 or Pretty Ricky. And woth that uniqueness there becomes a sort of competition to see who can really reach more of Chicago. on the other sides of Chicago, There are those that are drill music, but they don't exactly agree with Keef's way of life. those like Lil Jay  or SWAGG, who have had beef with GBE since it was alleged they had one of their core members and family, Lil Jojo, murdered. Although charges could never prove this, it has been hinted to by Kee'f tweets about the deceased rapper in a disrespectful tone.

But besides drill music, there have been those from Chicago who can speak of their times of hardship, yet in a way that reaches a farther demographic, such as that of the suburban youth. Those like Chance the Rapper, who has recently found his career climbing, speak about their drug use, trials of life living in Chicago and seeing all the murders and travesties, and their need to drop out of school to follow their true calling, can truly touch the people in the city who wish to get out like they did, and those who have been through that past and got away to better places outside the city. Rappers such as Martain $ky, Kembe X, Monster Mike, and Alex Wiley along with others have began their outstretch to nation wide tours and their music touching those in places they couldn't imagine could connect with what the city of Chicago feels.

Chicago rap has begun to take its place in the world, and it couldn't be a better time. The game is changing, and I believe our great city has potential to really reach out to the world with the universal language: music.

  1. I agree completely. Chicago rap has definitely changed over the years and changed a lot of people along with it. Nice little excerpt.
